Often criticized and controversial, Joseph Strauss' project saw the light of day after 4 years of building. Inaugurated in 1937, it has become a symbol of San Francisco and California. On its first day, more than 200 000 people walked on the bridge, before President Franklin Roosevelt opened it to traffic on the next day. The inauguration lasted about a week. This 2.7 kilometers-long bridge connects the city with Sausalito, in the county of Marin. It spans Golden Gate Detroit and separates San Francisco’s Bay from the Pacific Ocean. Accessible by foot, bike or car, more than 10 millions of visitors are conquered by this place each year. In the beginning, it was supposed to be painted in black with yellow stripes. Finally, they chose the color “international orange”, which blends in perfectly with the surrounding landscape and remains visible in heavy fog, because the place is known for its difficult natural constraints. Its considered as one of the seven wonders of the modern world by the American Society of Civil Engineers, thanks to the architecture of its two 227 meters famous pylons. The bridge became one of the historical sites of California in 1987, alongside Alcatraz federal prison and The Majestic Yosemite Hotel. During its 80 years of existence, it attracted tourists from the whole world. It is one of the most visited monuments of San Francisco. Due to its fame, it made numerous appearances in blockbusters, such as Superman and Star Trek and several TV shows. From taking pictures of this breathtaking view to being amazed by the architecture, you need to visit it and be the star of your own movie.
